Thermal Energy Management System (TEMS)

Thermal Energy Management System (TEMS)

Our Thermal Energy Management System (TEMS) is designed to efficiently manage a vessel’s heating and cooling demands while minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact.

To achieve this, we utilize a traditional chiller as a heat pump, where it continues to produce chilled water at the evaporator but, instead of discarding heat at the condenser, repurposes it for the vessel’s hot water circuit. Additionally, our water-to-water heat pump connects directly to seawater on both the chilled and hot water sides to balance demand fluctuations.

When operating in colder waters, our system leverages free cooling, using only pumps to circulate cooling water – eliminating the need for active refrigeration. Furthermore, with seamless integration into the vessel’s waste heat recovery system from generators or auxiliary equipment, we can provide heating without activating the heat pump’s compressor, significantly improving energy efficiency.

For vessels with abundant waste heat, TEMS can incorporate an absorption chiller, which converts high-temperature waste heat into chilled water with minimal electrical input. This feature is particularly beneficial for vessels with limited access to cold seawater, further enhancing overall system efficiency.

Finally, our system optimizes the transport of hot and cold water throughout the vessel. Pumps adjust their output based on real-time demand—scaling down to conserve energy when demand is low and ramping up when needed—ensuring maximum efficiency and performance.

Key Technologies in TEMS:

  • Chillers operating as heat pumps – Generate both cooling and heating
  • Water-to-water heat pumps – Recover and redistribute heat efficiently
  • Free cooling from seawater – Reduces energy use when in colder waters
  • Waste heat recovery integration – Utilizes excess heat from generators and auxiliary systems
  • Absorption chillers – Convert high-temperature waste heat into cooling with minimal electrical input
  • Demand-controlled pumps – Adjust flow based on real-time heating and cooling needs
