Our history

100 Years of Innovation, Engineering and Adaptation

In 2026, Teknotherm proudly celebrates 100 years of engineering excellence, innovation and adaptation. What began as a small engineering office in Oslo has grown into an international supplier of marine refrigeration, freezing and HVAC solutions, serving customers around the world.

Our story started on January 2, 1926, when engineer and entrepreneur Joacim Lehmkuhl founded Lehmkuhls Verksteder in Oslo. Drawing on his technical education in Norway and the United States, he established a company that initially focused on radio communication systems for ships. Shortly thereafter, refrigeration technology became an increasingly important part of the business.

A major milestone came in 1927 when the company became the Norwegian representative for Frigidaire, then part of General Motors. Through this partnership, the company introduced modern refrigeration equipment to the Norwegian market, supplying everything from household refrigerators to cold stores and centralized refrigeration systems for commercial buildings.

Growth and New Opportunities
Following World War II, the company entered a period of expansion. Renamed Lehmkuhl in 1951, it established a dedicated marine refrigeration department at a time when Norway’s merchant fleet was being rebuilt and modernized.

As the maritime industry grew, the company developed advanced refrigeration solutions for vessels operating worldwide. Partnerships with leading equipment manufacturers, combined with strong in-house engineering and production capabilities, helped establish a reputation for quality and innovation throughout Europe.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Lehmkuhl supplied refrigeration systems to numerous reefer vessels, cruise ships and commercial projects. The company also delivered refrigeration and air-conditioning systems to major industrial and public facilities across Scandinavia and beyond.

Establishing in Halden
As the business continued to expand, new facilities became necessary.
With support from The Regional Development Fund and local political leaders, a decision was made to establish a new office and manufacturing facility in Halden, south east of Norway, close to the Swedish border.

In 1973, a modern office and manufacturing plant was then opened, bringing sales, engineering and production together under one roof. The investment created new opportunities for growth and became an important part of the local community during a challenging economic period.
Although the global oil crisis and downturn in shipbuilding created new challenges, the company adapted by developing solutions for offshore vessels, fisheries and industrial applications.

The Birth of Teknotherm
A new chapter began on January 1, 1983, when the company became Teknotherm. With a renewed focus on marine refrigeration and engineering, Teknotherm streamlined its operations and concentrated on the markets where its expertise could create the greatest value.
Throughout the following decades, Teknotherm strengthened its position in the fishing and maritime industries. The company supplied advanced freezing and refrigeration systems for fishing vessels operating in some of the world’s most demanding environments, including Alaska and the North Pacific.

Expanding Internationally
As customer needs evolved, Teknotherm expanded internationally. New offices and subsidiaries were established in key maritime regions, including Ålesund, Gothenburg, Poland, Turkey, China and Spain. The company broadened its capabilities to include complete HVAC systems, ventilation solutions and global service support.

A significant milestone came in 2018 when Teknotherm became part of the Heinen & Hopman Group, one of the world’s leading suppliers of maritime climate solutions. This partnership strengthened Teknotherm’s international presence while preserving the expertise and customer focus built over generations.

Looking Ahead
Over the past century, technologies, refrigerants, markets and ownership structures have changed dramatically. Yet one thing has remained constant: a commitment to engineering excellence, innovation and customer success.

From radio systems for ships in the 1920s to today’s advanced marine refrigeration, freezing and HVAC solutions, Teknotherm has continuously adapted to meet the changing needs of the maritime industry.

As we celebrate 100 years of history, we also look forward to the future, building on a century of knowledge, dedication and innovation.
